This Quail Family captures the birds in a rare quiet moment. The tranquil sculpture has an eventful history. In 1971 Wheatley Allen received a phone call from California Governor Ronald Reagan's office. The governor wished to purchase two gifts from the state of California to take with him on a trip to Japan. He chose the California Quail Family to be given to Emperor Hirohito and a single resting quail to be given to Prime Minister Sato. Allen recalls, "Twelve years later when I met President Reagan in the White House, he remembered the sculpture he chose as a gift and said, "the quail made a perfect gift because the Emperor loves birds."
