The first bronze heron in this edition was the official gift from President Ronald Reagan to Premier Zhao Ziyang of China in 1984 on the only trip the President made to The People's Republic of China during his two terms in office.
Allen remembers, "Upon receiving the sculpture, the Office of Protocol called me and said they were thrilled with the piece. In China, the heron represents long life, making it an appropriate diplomatic gesture."
