Owls are considered opportunistic
nesters, as they do not build their own nests but find housing
in hollow trees or in the abandoned nests of other birds. Allen
explains how he got the idea for this comical little owl: "One day in Mendocino, I mistook
a knot in a weathered fence post for an owl peering out at me.
They do make their habitat in hollow trees, so it was a possibility
I liked enough to use in my sculpture." The Owl in a Fence
Post was presented to President George Bush by the California
Republican Committee in 1992.
