Wheatley Allen's first work in bronze, the Presidential Eagle, is an example of the expressive but naturalistic strength Allen brings to his work. The original wood version of the Presidential Eagle was commissioned by Jane Weinberger as a gift for her husband Caspar Weinberger, then Secretary of Defense under President Ronald Reagan, on his 65th birthday. The bronze Presidential Eagle is in the collections of Vern Orr, Secretary of the Air Force and Sean O'Keefe, the head of NASA. Allen says he chose the position of the eagle in this sculpture to represent its strength and power. For him, the sculpture recalls the scripture, "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength and mount up with wings as eagles." (Isaiah 40:31)
